“Music is not to be posessed. It’s to be shared.” James Mtume shares his thoughts on the impact that his R&B classic, ‘Juicy Fruit’ has had on music in this mini doc from Red Bull Music Academy’s beat:repeat NYC, a drum machine exhibition taking place in New York through May 31st.
Despite their minimal sound, Mtume was one of the most colorful funk and soul groups to emerge in the early ’80s. Their classic tune “Juicy Fruit” has been sampled often over the years, most notably in Notorious BIG’s “Juicy.” In this episode, Mtume talks about the tune and then takes us to a neighborhood boxing gym for a few rounds. Later, Da Beatminerz’s Evil Dee samples “Juicy Fruit” yet again, showing off his skills on one of hip hop’s iconic machines: the SP-1200.
